FOR VETERINARIANS AND ANIMAL HEALTH TECHNICIANS
Fatal and severe dog attacks on humans have been associated with prior or concurrent attacks on pets and livestock, so it is important that communities also track those incidents. If you are a veterinarian or animal health technician, please contact us. We would greatly appreciate your submission of information on dog attacks on pets and domestic livestock. We would also appreciate if you would be interested in participating in an affordable microchipping program.
We need your help to develop effective preventative measures, to target hotspots of danger and to promote awareness of the scope of the problem by means of submission of information regarding dog attacks that you encounter in your practice. We will assimilate the data, organize, analyze, then use and distribute it as needed.
Where possible, please include information regarding:
- Extent of Injuries.
- Victim Characteristics: species, breed, age, weight, sex, behavior and especially possible precipitating factors.
- Attacking Dog Characteristics: neuter status, sex, breed, approximate weight (whether weight is over 40 pounds), running at large, prior attack history, rabies vaccination status, licensing history.
- Dog Owner Characteristics (to target the owner for education): age, sex, race, school aged children or younger in the home.
- Location: in the home or where, geographic location that would help pinpoint hotspots on a map.
If you are a board certified animal behaviorist, please contact us.
If you are involved in the animal care profession in any way and would be willing to provide coupons or incentives to dog owners who participate in the microchipping program, please contact us. This can be in the form of pet food donations, coupons toward dog training, grooming, or boarding services...any encouragement we can give to the good people who choose to participate in a voluntary microchipping program.
AVMA report “A community Approach to Dog Bite Prevention”
We need your help to develop effective preventative measures, to target hotspots of danger and to promote awareness of the scope of the problem.
As veterinarians ourselves, we are not against dogs; we are for responsible dog ownership. The solution to the dog attack epidemic needs to target the human behind the dog and educating families as to the risk of leaving dogs and babies or young children alone together.
