Photo taken 5 days after extensive reconstructive surgery to close many gaping wounds and reattach most of ear”, oxygen therapy, blood transfusions and IV antibiotics, it would be 2 more months before the coordinating M.D. decided the complications were no longer potentially life threatening.
The organization was formed by Nancy Matthews, DVM, a veterinarian, scientist, and mother with strong protective instincts. She has first hand intimate knowledge of what exactly a dog mauling is, the needs of the victim, and the need to prevent dog attacks.
“When the pain was unbearable and I wanted to die, but couldn’t because I could still hear the children’s shrill screaming and I knew they were still alive. I had to somehow get to them, to save them.”
“I don’t feel that it’s right that you should have to be prepared to lay your life down to save your children from vicious dogs, just to take a walk or jog in your own neighborhood. Changes need to be made.”
Parents are faced with the pain in their children’s eyes as they suffer from painful dog attack injuries, or worse, have lost their child to a dog mauling. The pain of knowing that the boys were watching, and the fear that the attack has put in their lives, is bad enough. “I know others have it even worse. I was fortunate, blessed, to be able to come between the dogs and my children. For that I thank God.”
We are dedicated to the prevention of dog attacks, and helping those who have already faced the terror.
Why the name, P-A-C-K? Parents Against Canine Killers, technically it’s parents against canines' killing, and the behaviors and circumstances leading to the event. We target those behaviors and circumstances that precede dog attacks.
Also, the acronym P-A-C-K refers to the packing up of dogs. When they pack up, they play off each other’s energy and can do great harm. Read more: Pack hunting instincts.
People, when they pack up, can do great harm or great good, since we have free will.
We have chosen to “pack up” to finally have good come out of the tragedy that has been given to us. We intend to prevent dog attacks…It’s prevention that we are aiming for…the positive shadow of an event that will never occur, the child that won’t know the horror of a dog mauling; the parent who won’t go through life with a crushing sensation in her chest.
It took over a year to piece together the flashbacks of our dog attack and to write it down. It is too violent to put on the website as children could read it here. If you are interested in reading it, contact us and it can be sent directly to you.
